Graphic Design

The term graphic design broadly refers to a combination of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation. Various methods are used to create and combine symbols, images and/or words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages. Graphic design may use typography, visual arts and page layout techniques to produce the final result. Composition is one of the most important features of graphic design especially when using pre-existing materials or diverse elements.

In it's most traditional sense graphic design is the art of arranging visual elements (text, illustrations and photographs) in a unique and stylised way to convey a specific message. While the concept of making visual marks to convey information and express ideas can be traced back thousands of years to the cave drawings of Lascaux, the modern era of graphic design parallels the invention of the printing press in the 1400's.

In today's world graphic design is very much entwined with the technology used to produce it. A thorough knowledge of colour theory, layout, typography, printing processes and a host of other skills are essential for successful designers. Often described as both and art and a science, it is in reality a combination of both and successful designs are the perfect fusion of form and function.
