DB Shan Website
In March 2008, Harper Collins republished Darren’s Shan’s first novel which had been rewritten by the author. Originally entitled Ayuamarca, the new edition, Procession of the Dead was published under the name of DB Shan to distinguish it from the author’s books for children as it has darker more adult themes.
Darren also wanted the promotional website to appeal more to the target adult audience.
With this in mind Frequency created an original visual design for the site based on the book’s themes and content. The dark and malevolent image of the city at the heart of the series “The City Trilogy” echoes the gritty alternate but familiar urban “crimescape” depicted in the novel. This is combined with the quasi-religious imagery of ancient Incan civilisations that are referred to in the book’s opening chapter.
The DB Shan site was built on a Wordpress base with a considerable amount of customisation both to the frontend and backend functionality. An Amazon A-Shop was styled to integrate directly with the site. RSS Feeds powered by Feedburner provide an excellent way for fans to keep up to date with all of the latest entries from the author through RSS and email subscriptions both of which have links to all of the major social networking sites.
The site also includes a custom-designed messageboard for fans to communicate with each other and is now home to a small group of aspiring young writers. This is based on the robust SMF platform.
