Darren Shan

Author

Darren Shan is one of the world’s best selling children’s horror writers. But, Darren’s initial breakthrough was with an adult book, under his real name of Darren O’Shaughnessy. “Ayuamarca” was published in February 1999 and earned some very favourable reviews, but didn’t sell especially well. A sequel, followed the next year but suffered from similarly poor sales.

In January 2000 his first children’s book – Cirque Du Freak, written as a fun side-project, was published. The first book in a series entitled The Saga Of Darren Shan, it attracted rave reviews and much media attention — especially when the movie rights to the first two books were optioned by Warner Bros in a seven figure deal prior to publication!

Over the next five years, Darren wrote a total of 12 books about vampires. By the end of the series, the books were on sale in every continent of the world ... in 28 countries, over 20 languages and had sold somewhere in the region of 9 million copies.

Darren followed his successful vampire series with a new series about demons. The 10 volume series entitled The Demonata currently on it's eight installment has continued the authors incredible worldwide success.

In January 2005, the film rights for The Saga of Darren Shan were sold to Universal Studios. The film went into production in early 2008 with Oscar-winner Brian Helgeland as writer and American Pie's director Paul Weitz at the helm. The film under the title "Cirque du Freak" is set for release in early 2009 with a cast including John C. Reilly, Willem Dafoe and Salma Hayek.

Also in 2008, Darren's career as an author turned full circle as his first published novel Ayuamarca was republished as "Procession of the Dead" under the name D.B Shan. The novel which was comprehensively rewritten is the first in a trilogy to be published by Harper Collins.
